Treating Depression
According to the World Health Organization, the number of individuals affected by depression doubles after every ten years and by the year 202, it will have been the most pervasive disease in the world and number two leading death cause. Who also reports that today depression stands as second to heart disease as disabilities’ leading cause relate to sickness. Unfortunately, every individual will be affected by depression at one point of their life. It is likely that it will affect them or someone that they know. Those who are affected by depression may be disturbed by its effects for many years and at times their whole lives.
Why is depression so pervasive today? Moreover why is the number of individuals who will be affected by it predicted to increase at such a fast rate? But the most important question is there a way of dealing with it?
It has been impossible for doctors to concur on what causes depression. A number of them claim that it results form a chemical imbalance while others allege that it is hereditary. A number of them term it as an illness like hypertension or diabetes. A number of them still hold the belief that it is a “learned behavior”.
The most frequently administered depression treatment currently is therapy put together with antidepressant medication. This can prove to be very ex-pensive and time consuming without yielding much positive result. The question the changes to why isn’t the treatment being administered effective enough in dealing with depression?
A number of people do get a better mood after taking the antidepressants. But bear in mind that all mind-altering drugs even the antidepressants have the ability to give one a positive mood. The bettered mod that one gets as a result of using antidepressants is not proof that they had a chemical imbalance in the first instance.
The truth has to be told and the truth is if antidepressants and therapy were the most effective treatments for depression then the number of depressed people would not be increasing at such a fast rate. It is no doubt that these forms of treatment have largely helped a number of people to a certain extent but the truth remains that they are not completely effective. The most effective way to deal with depression is to get to the root of the problem. Get to know what caused the depression that the individual is facing and get ways to deal with that problem first. From there you can then include the therapy and the antidepressants and let the patient heal at their own pace.
With some exception, having depression can be the worst thing that can happen to a friend or family member and can often affect them just as much as the person with depression.
It’s very imporant to get a phycatric evaluation to make sure it’s not something even more serious than depression, or if there is any risk of the depressionie doing something they shouldn’t be.
